Burn Out – Climate Future Symposium

Filling hearts and opening minds towards a sustainable future Burn Out promises to bring together social, technological and architectural experts for a hands on weekend of invention, music and perhaps a revitalisation of the idea of ‘material revolution’.

Anthropologist Elizabeth Povinelli, Political Geographer Sinthujan Varatharajah, Artistic Director of Atelier LUMA Jan Boelen, Artistic Director of Rupert Centre for Art and Education Viktorija Siaulyte, Cem A. also known as @freeze_magazine, Conservator Kim Kraczon, Architect, Designer and, Educator, Mae-ling Lokko, Head of Nature Research at Jan Van Eyck Academie, Giulia Bellinetti, Kultur-Abteilungsleiterin im Ministerium, Frau Faber-Schmidt, Curator of Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Manuel Cirauqui in addition to Comedy sketches by Tamika Campbell and Carmen Chraim and music from Composer and lutenist, Jozef Van Wissem, Einstürzende Neubaten founding member FM Einheit, Epsilove, ABIBA, Juba, Musician, songwriter, artist, vocalist Coby Sey and drummer-composer, multi-instrumentalist Valentina Magaletti. Alongside this programme of events – delivered in German and English – will be the chance to enjoy E–WERK’s outdoor gardens, with food and drinks available from TRAFO.

Burn Out Weekend Notes: 

E-WERK Luckenwalde presents Burn  Out – a summer symposium weekend of music, performance and discussion

E-WERK Luckenwalde presents Burn Out, a weekend of talks, events and live music seeking to address climate and capitalism, de-growth, and environmental imperialism. The symposium, open to all, and taking place on 1 and 2 July 2023, is all about driving ecological, economic and human change to the cultural sector. Burn Out is part of a series of symposiums at E-WERK and LUMA Arles, Rupert Centre for Art and Education in collaboration with Gallery Climate Coalition on human and planetary sustainability. The events take place on Saturday from 13:00 – 23:00 and Sunday 13:00 -22:00 pm.

During Burn Out  presenters will share their research on topics such as institutional burn out, ecosystemic infrastructural change and art world hypocrisy. They will address critical questions, including what does institutional de-growth look like and what are its limits? How can we supersede environmental imperialism and enact radical care at local and global level to rectify historical exploitations? Performances will be splintered throughout the programme to create pockets of non-didactic reflection to champion art as an equally valuable form of knowledge transmission. Presentations will be conducted in both German and English, with live translation available.

Helen Turner, Artistic Director, E-WERK Luckewalde, said, “The earth sighs deeply with the weight of its own planetary and human exhaustion. Hypercapitalism, the hamster wheel, chronic stress, repetitive strain injury, the rat race and perma-crisis – Burn Out. The hope for systemic change, a slower pace, better working conditions, planetary calm, economic and ecological progress all appear to have faded, and once again humanity and the planet is burning out. This event will bring together artists, thinkers, activists and more to consider how we can catalyse systemic change for the future”

Throughout both days of Burn Out contributors and audiences will also be invited to join Stammtisch by Kunststrom Labor; a discursive outdoor dining table, which has been deliberately designed by Kunststrom Labor to invite rest, trust, rhizomatic hierarchy and meaningful conversation. On 1 and 2 July anyone will be able to sit at the long table to further elaborate key discussions of Burn Out, creating a patchwork of opinions and expressions from both contributing speakers, performers and audiences to EW. The programme will adopt a loose schedule so as to encourage organic and unexpected discussion.

Burn Out is part of the sustainable institution; an international symposium series, artist in residency programme and digital toolkit specifically focused on institutional sustainability, in partnership with LUMA Arles and Rupert centre for art, residencies and education in collaboration with Gallery Climate Coalition. Further events are planned for later in 2023-2024 at E-WERK Luckenwalde.
