How strange is this world, and how strange these days, which ceaselessly escape us and yet continually strike us with their absolute necessity.
Formally, we are close to the classic portrait, bust or mid-legs, face in profile or three-quarter length, and haughty. We feel a strong attraction for Flemish painting and its portraits of virtuoso sobriety, on neutral backgrounds, measured colors and exalted materials. And yet, of their faces one sees nothing. A fabric covers them, with printed patterns, repeated models, which remind us of the famous Indianneries of Jouy-en-Josas, the scenes of Jean-Baptiste Huet. This veil covers them and hides their features from us, tirelessly, canvas after canvas, a succession of prevented encounters.
