Aim higher than you can imagine ever being able to reach.
When you start on a piece of music, ask yourself…what would this sound like if I absolutely nailed it, and it came out absolutely mind-blowingly, pant-wettingly awesome?
Imagine it…really vividly imagine how your track or song would sound if it was the best thing you’d ever heard…your new favourite track ever.
Really try to hear it and grasp the details. Now set your sights there. That’s the end result that you want – you’ve got a map, you just need to follow it, pay attention and make smart decisions, and you’ll get there.
If you aim to make every track you do INSANELY GOOD….how can you go wrong? Even if you only get halfway there (but why would you? if you can imagine it as insanely good, you can make it insanely good!) it’ll still sound good!

David Learnt composition (harmony, counterpoint and orchestration) to degree level through studying Schoenbergs Fundamentals of Musical Composition, the classic text on twentieth century harmony by Vincent Persichetti, Henry Mancini’s Sounds and Scores, Rimsky-Korsakov’s excellent books on orchestration as well as studying any scores that intrigued me. He is a founder member of two bands, avant pop duo Cnut, and orchestral doombience outfit Regolith, and have performed across Europe with them.
