[dropcap style=”font-size:100px;color:#992211;”]E[/dropcap]very 98 seconds in America, a woman is sexually assaulted. This statistic is the motivation behind LA artist Elizabeth Tobias’ spoken word and sound performance to be performed on 27 January at the 2019 LA Art Show.
Women who have been victimised by violence often lack the support and resources needed to come forward. For artists who have been affected by the trauma of sexual assault, rarely, if ever, are there adequate opportunities to create work that addresses their stories within and beyond the larger art community.
Tobias, an expressive arts therapist, collected stories from sexual assault survivors by reaching out through social media and has used these stories to create Survivor! Share your 98 Second Story, a groundbreaking performance piece that promotes awareness and advocacy for sexual assault survivors. Weaving together spoken word and improvised sound, Tobias will perform with an ensemble of artist survivors to collectively promote needed awareness and advocacy for sexual assault survivors in the art community and throughout the public sphere.
